IET adopts Fusion’s small-to-medium-sized exhibition solution

The client:

Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)

The background:

The IET, an organisation that seeks to inspire, inform, and influence the global engineering community to engineer a better world, has existed since 2006 after the merging of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers.

Now, with a worldwide membership of around 160,000 people across 153 countries, the IET has a global reach – and a growing global events programme that needs managing throughout the year.

The IET uses Fusion to deliver event support at ECOC and CIRED, two large-scale conferences and exhibitions it organises. However, the IET also organises smaller events where the scale of support Fusion delivers isn’t required.

Desiring to tap into Fusion's expertise for smaller events, the IET signed up for Fusion’s new product, Fusion2Go. This pared-down exhibition registration solution includes Fusion's proprietary events software but excludes the physical deployment of their team.

“For ECOC and CIRED, we need Fusion’s large screens and team of people on the ground. But for events that welcome 100 – 200 people, we don’t. I was interested in Fusion’s technology that underpins large-scale events, but I wanted to replicate it across smaller events. Essentially, I wanted a pick-and-mix approach that enabled me to select the aspects of Fusion we could manage ourselves.”

Simon Blows, Head of Event Operations at the IET

The project:

In February 2024, the IET became the first organisation to employ Fusion’s self-managed event registration product.

While badging can be frustrating, Fusion2Go makes it seamless. The entire setup, including laptops and printers, is delivered to the IET offices, and a member of the Fusion team trains the IET team on-site.

Now, using Fusion2Go, the IET can manage the entire badging process for events welcoming up to 400 people.

There are already eight UK events in the pipeline that will adopt this approach. And, with plans to increase its presence across Europe, the IET is set to roll out this cost-effective approach worldwide.

The result:

Since adopting Fusion2Go, the IET has achieved the following:

  • Improved the layout of its registration desk at smaller events by removing the clutter and time associated with managing pre-printed badges by delivering ‘badging on demand’.

  • Accessed Fusion’s technology for smaller events without committing to the full package typically required for large-scale events.

  • Gained the confidence to deliver badging on demand for up to 400 people using its in-house team.

“With Fusion2Go, we can use Fusion’s technology to its fullest capacity but without using its personnel, which means we can maximise our own team. We also still benefit from Fusion’s support, which is very good and they always make sure that our team is well-equipped to handle everything during an event. Our relationship with Fusion will now grow with our global events programme.”

The Association of Event Organisers (AEO) is the trade body representing companies which conceive, create, develop or manage trade and consumer events. Run by its members for the benefit of its members, it has for over 100 years supported the events industry. The AEO Excellence Awards is their flagship event, representing the best that the events industry has to offer, showcasing the amazing achievements within the industry over the past 12 months. Every year, the illustrious event recognises and celebrates organisers’ achievements, standards of excellence from venues and service quality by suppliers and contractors throughout the industry. Fusion is the ‘Official Registration Partner of Choice’ for all of the Association of Event Organisers (AEO) events throughout 2024. We are delighted to play such a valuable role in addition to building on our long-standing relationship. But why are the Excellence Awards so important? Firstly, consider the crucial role exhibitions play in showcasing Britain’s finest assets both domestically and internationally. To understand the magnitude of the events market, it’s beneficial to review the report produced by the Events Industry Alliance (EIA) . Key data from this report revealed that in 2022, approximately 969 exhibitions were held at the UK's major exhibition venues, attracting an estimated 6.11 million visitors and 122,500 exhibitors. The direct impact of these exhibitions in the UK that year was: £9.4 (€11.0) billion of output (business sales) 99,000 jobs £4.6 (€5.4) billion of GDP (representing a contribution to UK GDP) That’s a lot of events, a vast number of people and a significant amount of money. Making all of this possible demands’ considerable skill, experience, planning, support, and technology. The AEO Awards acknowledge all the elements that contribute to the sector's success. They celebrate not only the frontline individuals but also the operational and marketing personnel who are often the unsung heroes. The Excellence Awards offer an ideal occasion for everyone to unite in celebrating excellence and enjoying themselves while recognising the remarkable achievements of this sector. However, the primary benefit is the opportunity to build genuine connections with fellow industry professionals and partners. This year’s celebration of excellence promises to be incredible experience, with a record-breaking 23.5% increase in entries compared to 2023! The shortlist for the Excellence Awards 2024 is out, and Fusion is immensely proud to be part of the event. We’re thrilled to see so many of our esteemed partners, including CloserStill Media , Nineteen Group , and Clarion Events , make the shortlist.
